&#8221; &#8230; a crucial ingredient in the rise of more-complex societies was the development of new social norms and informal institutions that are capable of domesticating our innate psychology for life in ever-expanding populations. Larger and more-complex societies prospered and spread to the degree that their norms and institutions effectively sustained successful interaction in ever-widening socioeconomic spheres, well beyond individuals’ local networks of kin and long-term relationships. It is these particular norms and their gradual internalization as proximate motivations that recalibrate our innate psychology for life in small-scale societies in a manner that permits successful larger-scale cooperation and exchange in vast communities&#8230;<br />
<br />
    [punishment, signaling, and reputational] &#8230; norms can facilitate trust, fairness, and cooperation in a diverse array of interactions, thereby allowing the most productive use of unevenly distributed skills, knowledge, and resources, as well as increasing cooperation in exchange, public goods, and warfare. More-effective norms and institutions can spread among societies by a variety of theoretically and empirically grounded mechanisms, including conquest and assimilation, preferential imitation of more-successful societies, or forwardlooking decision making by leaders or high-status coalitions.&#8221;<br />

societies are those that adopt market norms and they tend over time
to outcompete societies organized in more primitive top-down ways.

The US has more Nobel Laureates for medicine than all other nations combined. We have more research hospitals than all other nations combined. We develop more drugs and vaccines than all other nations combined. We certainly have the best doctors, cleanest hospitals, and most advanced technology and services. And to top it all off, Americans use BY FAR more healthcare services than any other nation. Healthcare is expensive, exacerbated by government involvement in the free market of insurance. It is not broken by any stretch of the imagination and Americans know that. </p></div></div><div class="Clog_Content_Outer"><!-- BEGIN_CLOG_CONTENT ID: 92909767-ADBF-4179-A816-AF74B6BC50B3 CLOGS.CLIPMARKS.COM --><div class="Clog_Top_Wrap"><div class="Clog_Source_First"><span>Clipped from <a rel="clipsource" target="_blank" title="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589605,00.html" href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589605,00.html">www.foxnews.com</a></span></div></div><div class="Clog_Middle_Wrap"><blockquote class="Clog_Content_Item" cite="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589605,00.html"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td><p><strong> Instead of killing off cancer cells with toxic drugs, scientists have discovered a molecular pathway that forces them to grow old and die, they said on Wednesday.</strong></p></td></tr></table></blockquote><div class="Clog_Content_Hr"></div><blockquote class="Clog_Content_Item" cite="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589605,00.html"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td><p>&#8220;What we discovered is if you damage cells, the cells have a built-in mechanism to put themselves out of business,&#8221; Pandolfi said. &#8220;They are stopped irreversibly from growing.&#8221;</p></td></tr></table></blockquote><div class="Clog_Content_Hr"></div><blockquote class="Clog_Content_Item" cite="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,589605,00.html"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td><p>In some of these, they inactivated the Skp2 gene. The Tea Party movement is a valiant resistance to decades of profligate entitlement spending, which has had the real effect of worsening every problem it was intended to fix, landing the country, at last, in a sea of impossible debt.
